Last night’s Raw saw a number of new names announced for the Royal Rumble as well as a new title match.
The biggest news was revealed in a pre-recorded video that saw Edge announce that for a second year in a row he will enter the Royal Rumble match. This will be Edge’s first match since he faced Randy Orton in ‘The Greatest Wrestling Match Of All Time’ at Backlash. During that match he suffered a triceps injury that put him back on the shelf mere months after his Rumble comeback after a nine year injury enforced retirement.
As well as Edge, Mustafa Ali announced that he will be entering the Rumble match as a replacement for the injured Kofi Kingston. This plays nicely into the fact that ‘KofiMania’ began two years ago when he replaced an injured Ali in the Elimination Chamber match, putting him on the road to win the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 35’.
In addition, it was confirmed that John Morrison and Sheamus will also take part in the match.
Another title match was added to the card when it was confirmed that Bobby Lashley will defend his United States Championship against Riddle. The match was set when Riddle beat Lashley’s Hurt Business cohorts, Shelton Benjamin, MVP and Cedric Alexander, in a gauntlet match.
Finally, WWE have let it be known that certain Rumble announcements will be made on Saturday’s edition of WWE Backstage. The show on Fox Sports will be making its comeback as a Royal Rumble special. On the programme, WWE will reveal who has drawn numbers one and two in the women’s Rumble match as well as entrant number 30 in the men’s match.
The Royal Rumble goes down this Sunday, January 31st on the WWE Network. Full details of the card can be found here.
