Last night’s WWE Elimination Chamber event ended with a shocking and unexpected conclusion. The Miz stood tall as the new WWE Champion.
Whilst many will be aghast at this development, the set up seems to be putting the pieces in place for Bobby Lashley to walk into WrestleMania as defending WWE Champion to face Drew McIntyre.
The cash in occurred in shocking fashion. After McIntyre had outlasted his five opponents in the Elimination Chamber, last defeating AJ Styles, Bobby Lashley hit the ring to unleash a vicious beatdown on the champion.
Lashley, who had lost the United States Championship earlier in the show, destroyed McIntyre before turning his eyes to the entrance ramp for Miz to head to the ring and initiate the cash in.
The MITB holder was clearly in cahoots in some form with The Hurt Business after being seen conversing with MVP earlier in the night. It seems Miz’s plan to remove himself from the Elimination Chamber match had been very carefully strategised.
Where does this leave us? In a really good position actually.
Expect the alliance between The Miz and The Hurt Business to be shortlived. This is clearly a mechanism to get the top belt on Lashley. Expect that to happen maybe as early as tonight on Raw and if not, by Fastlane.
Lashley has been on a tear recently and we speculated last week that him dropping the US belt this week would set him up nicely to challenge McIntyre at WrestleMania. He would be a deserving opponent too. With a developing nasty streak and brutal aura, he would present a fresh and credible heel for the Scot to conquer.
As it is, it looks like Lashley will actually be the defending champion going in, which is actually even better as it will give McIntyre that conquering moment in front of a crowd he so richly deserves. Expect him to get there by defeating Sheamus at Fastlane, maybe in a number one contenders match, to ensure he has momentum going into the ‘Show Of Shows’
With Roman Reigns vs. Edge now confirmed as the Universal Championship match at the event, WrestleMania’s two title matches are set up rather nicely indeed for the event that will take place on April 10th and 11th.
