Current WWE SmackDown Tag Team Champion Robert Roode has been working for the company for five years now.
Roode first appeared in NXT sat ringside at TakeOver: Dallas in April 2016, and has quickly risen through the ranks.
In an interview with Daily DDT, Roode talked fondly of how the time has flown and his experiences in NXT.
It really has [flown by]. It’s been a blast. The NXT experience was better than I ever thought it could be. I was excited when I got there to Dallas and I remember just nervous and anxious at the same time. I was in the business a long time leading up to that, leaving a company I had been at for such a long time.
Roode credits Paul Heyman with helping the pair come together and getting them started as a team on WWE television.
It was Paul Heyman’s idea, basically. I wasn’t doing a lot at the time and Dolph’s always been in and out [of storylines], for whatever reason. He’ll be busy one month and the next month you don’t see him. We were showing up to the TV and we weren’t doing a lot of stuff and one day we got to TV and Paul pulled us over and said, ‘I have this idea. I want to pitch it.’
Despite Roode having a strong tag team history, you could certainly see both he and Ziggler as top singles stars on the WWE roster, but for now we will have to wait and see what direction they take at and after WrestleMania.
