Ahead of last night’s second Fyter Fest event, AEW Owner Tony Khan promised us that Taz and Brian Cage would send shockwaves through the wrestling world.
Did it live up to that promise? Of course not, Khan’s hype around announcements never do, but what we did get was pretty cool.
In fact, Taz brought back one of his most memorable gimmicks as he crowned Cage as the new FTW Champion.
ECW fans might remember this non-sanctioned title belt as the one Taz introduced for himself in March 1999. The belt was a fixture in ECW until it was unified with the ECW World Title almost exactly a year after it came into being.
During that time, Sabu defeated Taz to win the title before losing it back to The Human Suplex Machine in a unification match at Living Dangerously 1999.
With Cage now crowned as ‘champion’, next week’s Fight For The Fallen main event is now being billed as a champion vs. champion match as Jon Moxley defends his AEW World Title against Cage.
The match was originally supposed to take place at Fyter Fest but was postponed due to Moxley needing to self isolate at home following his wife Renee Young testing positive for COVID-19.
