Last week it was confirmed by WWE that SummerSlam would not be taking place in Boston as originally planned on Sunday August 23rd.
Although not said outright by the company, the assumption was that the show would take place in the Performance Center in Orlando, as all major events have since WrestleMania.
However, according to a report by Mike Johnson in a PWInsider Elite report, this might not actually be the case.
According to Johnson, WWE officials have discussed at least one outdoor location for the event with both a beach location and a boat being mentioned specifically.
As out of the ordinary as both locations sound, neither would be unique in terms of wrestling events.
WCW held several Bash At The Beach events on actually beaches in the 90s and AEW held a taping of their weekly Dynamite show on Chris Jericho’s ‘Rock N’ Wrestling Rager At Sea’ cruise ship as recently as January this year.
The other bonus for both outdoor locations is that it would seemingly reduce the potential spread of COVID-19 given their open air nature.
Whilst it remains a disappointment that WWE’s major events remain free of fans, these locations would at least add character to a show compared to the sterile Performance Center setting.
With WWE starting to lay out plans for SummerSlam, we will likely find out soon enough whether there is any substance in these reports.
