It looks like the future of AEW Dynamite might be in some doubt as TNT has reportedly signed a long-term rights deal with the NHL.
The Athletic are reporting that Turner (TNT) have secured the rights package previously contracted to NBC Sports. Crucially, this package included the Wednesday Night Hockey slot. A programme that airs at the exact same time as AEW Dynamite.
The previous deal with NBC was worth $2 billion over 10 years and this new context with TNT is said to be even larger. An investment of this size means that the programming as part of the package will be given prime treatment on TNT.
Dynamite has aired on the network every Wednesday night since its inception in October 2019. Until last week, it aired in competition with NXT that broadcast on USA Network. This has now been moved to Tuesday nights.
With the NHL’s 2021/22 season expected to start in October, the future of Dynamite is most certainly in question. Will they be forced to move nights? Or will TNT find another night to air their hockey rights? Worst case scenario, could Turner decide they need to make room in the budget to accommodate their new sporting crown jewel?
Expect speculation on this situation to intensify as we move towards the start of NHL on TNT.
