NXT Takeover: In Your House went down last night from Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida and a new champion was crowned in the main event of the show.
By our reckoning, it was the best show WWE have put on in the ‘Empty Arena Era’ by some margin. It was however a long way behind the quality of previous NXT Takeovers but given the current circumstances, that is more than understandable. The peppering of silly 90s references throughout the show was a lovely addition to try and paper over the limitations of the situation and it made for a very fun night.
With the NXT Championship Backlot Brawl taking place in the middle of the show, Takeover was main-evented by the Women’s Championship match for the first time since Bayley and Sasha Banks fought their memorable Iron Woman match at Takeover: Respect in October 2015.
This match saw something of an upset after Io Sharai took the victory in the triple threat match against reigning champion Charlotte Flair and former champ Rhea Ripley. The finish came when Sharai pinned Ripley as Flair was trying to make the Aussie submit.
It was a fitting end tonight and probably the best match on the card. The highlight of the match saw Sharai dive from the In Your House set on to her opponents below.
The closing visual of the show was a wonderful Japanese style display of streamers to really put over the new champion as a big deal and the new face of the women’s division in NXT.
