At NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver last Thursday, Santos Escobar defeated Jordan Devlin in a ladder match to cement his status as the undisputed Cruiserweight Champion.

That status did not last long.

Going in to the debut of NXT on Tuesday nights, one of the major items advertised for the show was Escobar issuing an open challenge for his championship.

The challenge was answered by KUSHIDA, fresh off his loss to Pete Dunne on the first night of Stand & Deliver. Despite interference from Legado del Fantasma, the former Timesplitter pinned Escobar after a fast-paced 11 minute match to secure his first gold since arriving in NXT.

Shortly after the match the new champion was confronted by Jordan Devlin who put him on warning that although he was heading back to Ireland, he would be back in the USA soon and would be gunning to win back his championship.
