Legendary Band Originally Planned To Play Live At WrestleMania During The Undertaker’s Entrance

WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon has revealed that legendary heavy metal band Metallica were due to take part in The Undertaker’s WrestleMania 36 entrance until all original plans for the event were cancelled.

The Undertaker's Final Match

Until the global COVID-19 pandemic, WWE planned to hold WrestleMania 36 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay on April 5th 2020.

The revised plan saw the event held over two nights at the Performance Center in Orlando, Florida. The change in venue forced significant creative changes to the make up of the card and the presentation of the show.

One match that was affected more than most was The Undertaker vs. AJ Styles.

Originally pencilled in as a standard arena based match, the changing situation saw the match being christened a Boneyard Match and filmed in a ‘cinematic’ style elsewhere in Florida.

One of the most notable aspects of this well received match was the use of Metallica’s ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’ track that was used to soundtrack what we now know to be The Undertaker’s ‘Last Ride’ into retirement.

It was revealed this week, in a media call by Stephanie McMahon, that Metallica’s involvement in WrestleMania was due to be more significant. They were in fact due to play live during The Undertaker’s entrance.

McMahon said:

“”We’ve experimented with cinematic matches. The Boneyard match was like a 20-minute movie sequence and it was cut to Metallica because Metallica was going to be a part of WrestleMania, their music was going to be a part of Undertaker’s entrance. When everything changed, they said ‘we still want to be a part of this if we can, we’re not backing out.’ We were very grateful to Metallica for helping score the entire sequence.”

The Undertaker has had some truly memorable WrestleMania entrances in the past. It’s hard to imagine any of those topping the spectacle of one of the all-time great heavy metal bands playing ‘Taker to the ring in front of 80,000 people.
