Jon Moxley has discussed his frustrations over his creative limitations during his tenure with WWE on Wrestling Observer Radio, in particular one spot which would see him cut open the mat and expose the wooden boards of the ring

“We know exactly what’s going to happen, it’s the same stupid Hell in a Cell match. I felt like I was always overpromising what I was allowed to actually deliver. I’ve pitched so many things over the years, everything imaginable, I have pitched. Something simple like tearing the canvas and exposing the boards. I pitched that for a Hell in a Cell match, and like Hunter and Vince and Seth. I take a box cutter and expose the wood, and they look at me like I’m f**king stupid. They don’t get it all, Vince is like ‘I don’t think people are going to understand it’. They looked at me like I was an idiot. Hunter was rolling his eyes, Vince is confused.”

Whilst Moxley didn’t get to use his seemingly audacious idea, keen observers will note that this exact spot did make its way into a future Hell In A Cell match.

In October 2015, Brock Lesnar defeated The Undertaker inside the structure in a match that saw this very thing occur. So maybe they liked the idea more than they let on?

Based on the timings of that match and Moxley’s HIAC encounters, we can summise that this discussion took place in the run up to his encounter with Seth Rollins at Hell In A Cell 2014.
