Ok, maybe ‘shock’ is overplaying it a bit after numerous rumours over the last few weeks but John Cena did indeed make his big return to WWE to close out the Money In The Bank PPV and presumably set up SummerSlam’s main event.
The moment came right at the end of a fantastic main event between Roman Reigns and Edge that capped off WWE’s best show of the year at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
After Reigns had defeated Edge to retain his Universal Championship (with more than a little assistance from Seth Rollins), The Tribal Chief took to the microphone to once again insist the fans in attendance acknowledge him.
As boos filled the arena, a familiar theme music struck up and the massive tron flashed bright green as Cena made his way on to the stage to be greeted by one of the biggest crowd reactions in years and years.
Cena, who has not been seen in a WWE ring since losing to The Fiend in a Firefly Funhouse cinematic match at WrestleMania 36, squared off with a disgruntled looking Reigns to close the show.
WWE have already confirmed Cena will appear on Raw tonight and will presumably have freedom to appear on both main roster brands during this run.
It does not take any sort of leap of speculation to suggest that our main event for SummerSlam has now been set and it will truly feel like a huge match between a pair of massive stars.
We will of course be running viewing parties in various cities across the UK for the event on Saturday August 21st. Visit our ticket page to see if we are running near you.
