At Hooked On Wrestling, we have always had a clear policy to stick to discussion and comment about positive aspects of the wrestling business.
However, over the last 24 hours we have of course seen the stories coming to light under the #speakingout hashtag that have compelled us to break our policy and comment on the situation.
Firstly, we vehemently stand by anyone who has been made a victim of personal or physical abuse stemming from their personal or professional relationships forged within wrestling, either within the industry or as fans. We passionately believe that the wrestling community should stand shoulder to shoulder as one and it saddens us that a large number of people have not been able to do so because of the actions of others.
Our slogan has always been ‘It’s wrestling, enjoy it’ and it pains us to think that some of individuals within the wrestling community have not been able to fully enjoy their position in their community through no fault of their own.
The wrestling community should be a safe and welcoming one for anyone, from any background and we will continue to do all we can to ensure this is the case within our small part of it. We can only hope that the bravery of those speaking out, and the subsequent anguish this is likely to cause them, will not be for naught. We must all ensure that we repay this courage by committing that in future, behaviour of this kind will not be ignored.
As they have spoken out this week, we must all speak out in the future.
Out of respect for everyone involved, we will not be covering any new or past allegations as “news”. It would be disrespectful and unethical, not to mention wrongly opportunistic. This issue is far more important than gossip, clicks or page views on a website.
