The group stages of the tournament to crown an interim NXT Cruiserweight Champion were completed last night but we still don’t know which two men will be in the final.
In Group A, Drake Maverick faced KUSHIDA. The story going into the match was all about Maverick’s real life release and how winning this tournament could save his job.
Is it a proper angle? Is it simply Maverick making the best of a bad situation? You can read more about it, and our tribute to Maverick’s career here.
The match ended with Maverick pulling out the win against the man he declared to be the best wrestler in the world after a gripping match.
This left both men, as well as Jake Atlas tied to finish the group, each with a 2-1 record. It was announced post-match that all three would compete next week to determine a winner of the group to go on to the final to face the Group B winner. That winner is…
Unclear. El Hijo del Fantasma defeated Akira Tozawa on the show which left both men with 2-1 records.
By the previously stated rules, this should leave Fantasma as the group winner as tied records were said to be determined head to head results.
As Fantasma won the match, that would make him the group winner. Right?
Well no mention of this was made by the announcers but it was made clear on WWE social media afterwards that’s Fantasma would indeed take his place in the final.
Whilst it has not been formally announced, it’s safe to assume the tournament final will be held at NXT Takeover: In Your House on June 7th.
The interim status of the winner means that current Cruiserweight Champion will also still be recognised as the title holder.
Eventually both title holders will meet to determine an undisputed champion. This UFC style angle results in Devlin being stuck in Ireland due to the Coronavirus induced travel ban meaning he cannot appear on WWE television.
