Hyping up the WrestleMania week, Edge has been doing the interview rounds and talking about the biggest PPV of the year. Speaking to Ryan Satin on the ‘Out of Character’ podcast, and also Alex Biese over at Asbury Park Press, both interviewers made certain to ask about his return from injury as well as the returning crowds.
“Our audience, it’s our phantom limb,” Edge said. “Without them there, it doesn’t feel quite the same yet. It’s not going to feel the way it’s supposed to until we get there that night and you actually hear a rumble and a roar out there from an audience. Then it will become fully real to me, I think.”
Obviously it’s been a long time since there was a live crowd at a WWE event, over a year in fact. Does the Rated R Superstar have any idea what the reactions from the fans will be?
“Right now, as a company, we’re all kind of flying blind because we have these stories and we have this creative but we don’t know what the actual reaction is going to be,” Edge said. “When we walk out there, who knows how they’re going to react?
“An audience has never seen this (version of) Roman Reigns, and I think this is the Roman Reigns they’ve wanted to see for a long time. So how are they going to react? We don’t know. How are they going to react to me at this stage and kind of flipping the switch on finding the old Rated-R Superstar? Who knows. I think the bottom line is you’ve just got to hope they react. And I’d like to think, as starved as we all are just for entertainment and a walk back into whatever our new normal is, I’d like to think that’s going to be a pretty ravenous crowd, reaction-wise.”
Not to forget about Daniel Bryan either. All three wrestlers at some point weren’t sure they’d ever wrestle again. Edge and Bryan both officially retired due to injury and Reigns had to step away from the ring in 2018 due to his leukaemia diagnosis.
“If you had said four years ago that there was the possibility that the three of us could be main-eventing WrestleMania, I think most people would say you’re crazy,” Edge continued. “It’s weird because this is one of those instances where it’s more than Roman Reigns, Daniel Bryan and Edge. That kinda goes more to Joe, Bryan and Adam and just how crazy it all is. And I guess speaks to how stubborn the three of us are!”
Edge will be facing both Reigns and Bryan on the second night of WrestleMania on April 11th. The full card, including how and where to watch, can be found here!
