On This Day In Wrestling…July 20th

On 20th July in wrestling history, the ROH Tag Team Titles changed hands when The Briscoes won a violent street fight in New York City.

1973 – Jack Brisco defeated Harley Race in Houston, Texas to capture the NWA World Heavyweight Championship for the first time.

1992 – Scott Hall taped his first matches for WWE as Razor Ramon when he defeated Jim Powers, Paul Van Dow and Tony Roy (In separate matches) at a WWF Superstars Of Wrestling taping.

1998 – Two title changes took place on WCW Monday Nitro from Salt Lake City, Utah. Scott Hall and The Giant of the NWO Hollywood faction defeated NWO Wolfpac’s Kevin Nash and Sting for the WCW Tag Team Championship and Bret Hart won the WCW United States Championship from Diamond Dallas Page.

2008 – Numerous titles changed hands at WWE’s Great American Bash PPV held at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The first of these changes on the night saw The Edgeheads (Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder) capture the WWE Tag Team Championship from The Miz and John Morrison in a four-way tag team match that also included the teams of Finlay & Hornswoggle and Jesse & Festus. The win made Ryder and Hawkins the team with the youngest combined age to capture a tag team championship in WWE history. Also on the night, Shelton Benjamin beat Matt Hardy for the United States Championship and Michelle McCool snared the Divas Championship with a win over Natalya.

On This Day In Wrestling History...28th July

2014 – WWE’s Battleground PPV took place at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida. In the main event, John Cena retained the World Heavyweight Championship in a Fatal Four-Way match against Kane, Roman Reigns and Randy Orton. Earlier on the card The Miz captured the Intercontinental Championship after emerging victorious in a battle royal for the title.

2019 – ROH ‘Manhattan Mayhem ’19’ took place at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, New York. The main event saw the ROH Tag Team Championship change hands when Jay and Mark Briscoe defeated The Guerillas Of Destiny (Tama Tonga & Tonga Loa) in a Street Fight.

2020 – On an episode of Raw taped at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, Randy Orton defeated The Big Show in an Unsanctioned Match that was to be Show’s last match in WWE. He left the company in early 2021 to sign with AEW. He had been with WWE since 1999. At the same taping (But filmed for the following episode), Sasha Banks defeated Asuka to win the Raw Women’s Championship. As per the stipulations of the match that allowed it, the title changed hands via a count out.
