On This Day in Wrestling History…15th February

On February 15th in wrestling history, Eddie Guerrero created one of the most beloved moments in WWE history with his WWE Championship win.

1986 – At ‘NWA: Battle Of The Belts II’ the company debuted the iconic ‘Big Gold Belt’ as their new world championship title.

1986 – At the WWF Saturday Night’s Main Event taping from Phoenix, Arizona Mr T. defeated Bob Orton Jr. by count out in a boxing match, Brutus Beefcake & Greg Valentine retained the WWF Tag Team Titles against The British Bulldogs and Hulk Hogan retained the WWF World Heavyweight Title against The Magnificent Muraco by count out.

1989 – ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage defeated The Ultimate Warrior by count out in a rare Champion v Champion match between the two for the WWF World Heavyweight and Intercontinental championships in a dark match at the WWF Superstars of Wrestling tapings in Binghampton, New York.  

1989 – The Road Warriors Hawk and Animal along with Genichiro Tenryu fought to a draw against Kevin Sullivan, Mike Rotunda, and Dr. Death Steve Williams for the NWA Six-Man Tag Team Titles in the main event of ‘NWA Clash Of The Champions: St Valentine’s Day Massacre’ in Cleveland, Ohio.

1998 – Savio Vega replaced an injured WWF Champion Shawn Michaels in the main event of WWF ‘In Your House: No Way Out of Texas’ from Houston, Texas.  The No Disqualification 8-Man Tag team match was won by the team of ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, Owen Hart, Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie. They defeated Triple H, Billy Gunn, ‘Roaddogg’ Jesse James and Savio Vega. At the conclusion of the match Chyna provoked Austin which resulted in the Ninth Wonder of the World receiving a Stone Cold Stunner.

On This Day in Wrestling History...24th June

1998 – Louie Spicolli (Formerly Rad Radford in the WWF) was found dead in his sleep at his home in Los Angeles. He was only 27 years old.

1999 – The Rock regained the WWF Title from Mankind in a Ladder match on WWF Raw in Birmingham, Alabama with assistance from Paul Wight. The victory confirmed the main event WWF Title match for WrestleMania XV between The Rock and ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin.  X-Pac lost the WWF European Title to Shane McMahon in a tag team match which included Triple H and Kane as their respective partners.

2004 – Eddie Guerrero defeated Brock Lesnar in a upset victory for the WWE Championship at WWE No Way Out at the Cow Palace in San Francisco.  This win made Guerrero a Triple Crown and Grand Slam Champion.  Also, Eddie’s nephew Chavo Guerrero defeated Rey Mysterio for the WWE Cruiserweight Title.

2004 – In Tokyo, Japan, Hiroyoshi Tenzan defeated Genichiro Tenryu to win the vacant IWGP Heavyweight Championship. The win came in a one-night tournament final to crown a new champion ten days after Shinsuke Nakamura was forced to vacate the title due to injury.

2009 – Edge lost the WWE Championship in the first off two Elimination Chamber matches at No Way Out in Seattle, Washington.  He would then attack Kofi Kingston during his entrance and take Kingston’s place in the World Heavyweight Championship chamber match to win the title. Edge would go on to Wrestlemania 25 to defend the title against John Cena and The Big Show.  Triple H who won the WWE Championship in the first chamber match.

On This Day in Wrestling History...21st June

2015 – At RevPro High Stakes at York Hall in London, AJ Styles defeated Will Ospreay in the main event.  Marty Scrull retained the RevPro British Heavyweight Title against Ricochet.

2016 – In a five-way match on Monday Night Raw from Anaheim, California, Kevin Owens won the WWE Intercontinental Championship. The other combatants were the defending champion Dean Ambrose, Dolph Ziggler, Stardust and Tyler Breeze.
