On This Day In Wrestling History…September 20th

On this day in wrestling, the legendary Sting took part in his last ever match, for the WWE Title against Seth Rollins.

1985 – In a rate manager vs. manager battle, Captain Lou Albano, 52, defeated ‘Classy’ Freddie Blassie in a steel cage match. It would prove to be the 67 year old Blassie’s last match.

1993 – In Nagoya, Japan, Shinya Hashimoto ended The Great Muta’s 400 day IWGP Heavyweight Championship reign. At the time, the longest reign in the title’s history.

1997 – WWE presented their first UK exclusive PPV, One Night Only at the NEC Arena in Birmingham, England. The main event saw the European Title change hands for the first time as Shawn Michaels defeated The British Bulldog in shocking fashion in front of an arena full of his countrymen.

1997 – ECW As Good As It Gets took place at the ECW Arena in Philadelphia. The biggest talking point of the show was Beulah McGillicutty defeating Bill Alfonso in a bout so bloody that Alfonso was said to have lost almost 1/3 of the blood in his body.

1999 – On an episode of ‘Raw Is War’ from Houston, Texas, The Rock N’ Sock Connection (The Rock and Mankind) defeated The Undertaker and Big Show to win their second WWE Tag Team Championship. This would be the last match The Undertaker wrestled in his ‘Dead Man’ character until April 2004.

2004 – Christy Hemme is announced as the winner of the first Raw Diva Search.

2005 – Bobby Lashley makes his televised WWE debut with a win over Simon Dean.

2013 – At Ring Of Honor ‘Death Before Dishonor XI’, Adam Cole defeats Michael Elgin to win the vacant ROH World Championship.

2015 – WWE Night Of Champions took place in Houston, Texas. In the main event, Seth Rollins retained the WWE Championship with a win over Sting. An injury sustained during the match led directly to Sting’s retirement, therefore marking this match as the last of his legendary career.

2019 – Rick Bognar, best known to most fans as Fake Razor Ramon, passed away.
