On This Day In Wrestling History… January 6th

On 6th January in wrestling history, did Ric Flair really lose a championship if he ignores it? And the return of Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts to WWE.

1983 – In Puerto Rico WWC Heavyweight Champion Carlos Colón took on touring NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair in what was billed locally as a unification bout to merge both the NWA and WWC Heavyweight Titles. Colón came out the winner and was declared a Universal Champion, holding both the NWA and WWC championship belts. However, Flair and the NWA had allegedly not agreed to this being a unification match and so Flair received the belt back in (what is believed to have been) a phantom title change that took place on January 23rd. Very little evidence shows that Ric Flair regained the belt in an actual match and the NWA decided to not recognise either title change.

1995 – In Mexico City at CMLL Super Viernes, El Satanico retained the CMLL Middleweight Title against Hector Garza in a 2 out of 3 falls match.

1995 – ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage made his WCW in ring debut, defeating Avalanche.

2003 – On WWE Monday Night RAW in Phoenix, Arizona, the team of Lance Storm and William Regal defeat Booker T and Goldust to become the World Tag Team Champions.

2008 – TNA Final Resolution is held in Orlando, Florida. Three championships are on the line but none change hands. Gail Kim pinned Awesome Kong in a no disqualification match to retain the TNA Knockouts Championship, A.J. Styles and Tomko defeated Kevin Nash and Samoa Joe to keep the Tag Team Championships and in the main event Kurt Angle defeats Christian Cage to retain the TNA World Heavyweight Championship with some outside interference from A.J. Styles.

2014 – WWE presented ‘Old School’ RAW from Baltimore, Maryland. ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper interview the Shield on his Piper’s Pit segment, which also featured the New Age Outlaws. Sgt. Slaughter was a guest referee for the Great Khali vs. Damien Sandow and later on Too Cool (Grandmaster Sexay, Rikishi and Scotty 2 Hotty) defeated 3MB (Drew McIntyre, Heath Slater and Jinder Mahal.) In the main event Roman Reigns defeated C.M. Punk and just as the rest of the Shield was about to join in on beating down Punk, Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts made a goosebump inducing appearance, culminating in Roberts placing his pet snake on a (smiling) Dean Ambrose.

2019 – RevPro Live at the Cockpit 37 was held in London, England. The main event saw PAC challenge Zack Sabre Jr. for the RevPro British Heavyweight Title. PAC would win the match, but as it was by disqualification so he did not take the championship.

2019 – At Impact Wrestling: Homecoming at the State Fairgrounds Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, Taya Valkryrie defeated Tessa Blanchard for the Knockouts Championship. This would begin the longest reign in that title’s history to that point.
